Story #1
Twitch, the male foxer that I found on the concrete floor of a friends garage back in July. He didn't have any hair and his eyes weren't open yet ( my friend thought he was a rat, lol) when she asked me to come and look at him, she said he had been in there for almost three days with no signs of momma and he had managed to crawl all the way across the floor to the door! I had never rescued a squirrel before, many other animals but no squirrels. I remembered my husband telling me about one he had found and raised when he was young so I thought with his help maybe I could save the little guy. So I checked all around for a sign of momma with no luck and since it was so friggin hot I knew he wouldn't last much longer. I took him home and got him hydrated and safe, then I called my hubby....he was not thrilled :) since this was not my first animal rescue, lol. Although,he was happy to hear it wasn't another opossum! It was settled, he was staying so I decided to name him Twitch, seemed appropriate :) He had small seizures in the beginning. Well, I soon discovered that I was going through motherhood once again...up every few hours to feed, researching how to's, etc. Funny, much like when my daughter was born, it didn't bother me to do this and I had this strange calm about me. So mommy again...I loved every minute of it! Watching him grow was fascinating to me and he was doing so well or so I thought. He had just started eating solids, cracking nuts on his own, going outside, getting ready for release and one day he was sitting on the arm of the couch eating a nut and started falling over like he was sleepy or something, I checked him out, nothing seemed wrong. It got worse, FAST! Before I knew it he couldn't stand and he had horrible seizures, wouldn't or couldn't eat, drink, NOTHING! Honestly, I am usually very calm in emergency situations but I freaked out! The thought of losing him was inconceivable to me, he was a part of the family! I haven't cried like that in a long while, I called my vet of 10 years who just so happened to be on vacation and his lovely stand in wouldn't even talk to me about him, I looked everything I could up online, called every vet and animal related place I could think of! After driving for two hours to towards the closest rehab center I could trust I got stuck in traffic and they closed before I could get there....Panic increase, I was on the phone with my husband who was still searching online and through the phone book to help me when I finally stopped panicing and just did the only thing I could to help him, wasn't sure if it was the right treatment since I didn't truly know what the problem was but I was out of options. It worked, not miracle work but it helped him. I made it home and continued to treat him for MBD, He needed calcium! I was horrified that it could be me that was killing my boy! The next day, I finally got in touch with someone who has some sense..Chris. Yep, Chris from this site :). She gave me the name to a well know rehaber and some more advice on how to keep helping him through it, and it worked. He is doing so well now! He's a survivor! No more seizures! I changed his diet (of course) as she said and he is a big boy now with a few friends of his own in our back yard, he's ready for the world, so THANK YOU CHRIS! and THANKS to all the wonderful people at thesquirrelboard.com who gave me the encouragement and some helpful tips on how to be a better momma.
